"Membership? Why do I need to join?"
Membership is about belonging. The Bible describes the church as a family - the family of God. Sure, every believer is a part of the family of God generally speaking. But that's sort of a cosmic, out there somewhere idea. Membership brings this spiritual truth to life.

Membership is about mutual support. A church is not a building, it's not an event, it's not even a belief system. A church is ultimately people. People who are committed to Christ and to each other.

Membership is about making a difference. We all come to Christ because of what we want to get out of the deal. Admit it, it's true. Forgiveness, eternal life, a clean conscience, relief... you name it. That's where we start. But the idea of growth is that we move from that beginning point toward not only receiving from Him, but also serving Him in outward-focused ways. The same progression holds with your church family as well. We initially seek out a healthy church & connect there because of what we want to get out of the deal - inspiration, encouragement, spiritual insight, make my kids act nice, etc. - and as we grow, we step into the game and empower our church to impact the lives of others.

"OK, so who should join?"
To help you answer that question, we've prepared a short self-survey. Membership is certainly a big step forward in growth & commitment. This survey may help you determine if you're ready to cross the line. Answer the following questions - but not out loud, people will think you're weird.

You Know It's Time to Join RVC When...
1. You say "our church" or "my church" instead of "that church" or "this church."

2. You find yourself gravitating toward the same seat every Sunday morning.

3. You can complete the following statement: Turning __________ people into whole-hearted followers of Christ.

4. Someone asks you where you attend church and you say, "River Valley Church."

5. You've invited someone to attend service with you.

6. You put some of your hard-earned money in the little black basket.

7. You start to think, "Hey, maybe we CAN be a church before we have a building of our own."

8. You quote Lowell in conversation with a friend.

9. The words "life-giving" pop out of your mouth involuntarily.

10. You know the lyrics to the birthday songs!

Check the bulletin in sevice for the next workshop.
